Get to know Allie DeWitt, development manager at Hope House, in her new hire Q&A!
Describe your experience as an intern at Hope House.
I had a great experience as the volunteer and development intern at Hope House. I had so much freedom to try new things and discover where I could fit in the nonprofit world. I was highly-encouraged and appreciated. It gave me a lot of confidence in myself and my abilities! I never once was sent to get coffee or felt like I was doing typical intern tasks. I was 100% a part of the team, and that is why I am so happy to be back!
What were your duties/responsibilities as an intern?
I worked with our volunteer coordinator and development director. My main responsibilities were social media and volunteer projects. I also gave tours of Hope House, requested in-kind donations and anything my two supervisors needed help with. My day-to-day was never the same.
How did your experience as an intern prepare you for your current position at Hope House?
I am doing the exact job of my supervisors now. I have taken over the role of volunteer coordinator and assumed a lot of the job that my director was doing when I was an intern. I got to watch each of them do what I am doing. It is a huge benefit for me to know what was done in the past. I also came in with a great understanding and passion for our mission. Being in love with what you do from day one on the job is pretty awesome!
What is your current job title and responsibility?
I am the development manager. I oversee our volunteer program, manage events, assist with overall fundraising efforts and organize our holiday adoption program. I also run our social media accounts. I work very closely with our Development Director to grow Hope House’s resources.
What are you passionate about?
There are two things that I am very passionate about at Hope House. One is ensuring that our children have what that they need – whether that is formula and diapers, or opportunities to do things like go to the zoo. Our children deserve all the things this world can offer, and it is my job to make sure they have everything. The second is volunteerism. I love connecting people in our community with ways to serve. I believe that volunteering is the greatest way to find who we really are and what we are truly passionate about.
What is the biggest challenge that you’ve had to overcome in this position?
S T I G M A. I hate being asked the question “Aren’t you afraid to work there?” NO. I am not. You cannot get HIV from daily human interactions. I have had to learn how to be more open to educating than jumping straight to anger. I had no idea people were still so uneducated. I hope that we can spread our mission in a way that disbands all the myths about HIV.
What do you hope for the future of Hope House?
My hope for the future is that we can serve more children and that our city becomes well educated on HIV/AIDS. We have the capacity to add another infant room.
What is a motto that you like to live your life by?
